In the high regions of the Peruvian Andes, at an altitude of over 4000 (13,000 feet) metres, there are still many remote and neglected indigenous village communities. The mountain farmers established there face precarious living conditions. At these high altitudes, they are only able to cultivate potatoes. Often, however, whole potato plantations are annihilated by pests or climatic influences with the result that the food security of the families living there is endangered.

As a result, our aid projects concentrate on building greenhouses, which allows families to grow other vegetables which would otherwise not grow outdoors at such altitudes. Above all, the fresh vegetables benefit the children in these communities as they receive a healthier and more balanced diet enabling them as a result to develop better physically and mentally.

The Porvenir Peru Foundation is the only Swiss aid organisation actively involved in this remote mountainous area of the Andes which can only be reached on foot with much difficulty.
